Legal Translator/Interpreter

Location: New York, New York                  Position: Paralegal

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide faithful and fluent oral interpretation and accurate translation of written text and complex legal documents from Chinese to English and English to Chinese for mid-size Manhattan law firm specializing in the field of immigration and commercial litigation.

  • Follow ethical codes that protect the confidentiality of information and the client/attorney privilege rules of conduct.

  • Use high level of skill to accurately provide spontaneous or consecutive interpretations from Chinese into English, maintaining message content, context, and style as much as possible.

  • Listen to clients' statements to determine meanings and prepare written transcriptions and translations.

  • Compile terminology and information to be used in translations, including legal terms.

  • Read a variety of written materials in the Chinese language, such as complex legal documents, news and government reports, biographies, all forms of written communications, publications, etcetera, and provide certified translations into English. Identify and resolve conflicts related to the meanings of words, concepts, practices, or behaviors.

  • Check translations performed by others to ensure that they are accurate and remain consistent throughout translation revisions. Provide accurate and complete translations for attorneys and clients in both English and Chinese, and translate evidence required in the litigation and immigration departments including notarized statements of fact, medical records, business and financial records, contracts, publications and letters.

  • Work closely with firm's office in Beijing and with Chinese speaking clients seeking legal representation to ensure they fully understand the nature and range of the professional legal service(s) available at our firm and the terms and conditions of engagement, identifying and resolving any misunderstandings related to the meanings of words, concepts, and practices.

  • Perform any legal support activity required by immigration law firm as directed by Office Manager or attorneys including providing accurate translation of Chinese documents as they relate to evidence in business immigration cases, business litigation and complex investment visa documentation, and assuring the accurate drafting of correspondence and other legal forms and pleadings that utilize exemplary English grammar, spelling and syntax, while accurately stating the facts as provided in the Chinese language by the client(s).

  • Prepare case files for government filings by performing tasks such as conducting research pertinent to the individual's case; gathering and analyzing data; formatting research into readable and understandable English by ensuring translations are accurate; and, organizing exhibits for submission.

  • Act as Case Manager ensuring that all cases are properly organized and that all documents in a foreign language are accompanied by a certified translation into English.

  • Communicate with representatives from immigration office, clients, medical providers, government agency representatives, etc., and relaying information to Chinese speaking clients and ensuring their understanding.

  • Call upon and schedule witnesses to testify at hearings when necessary and accurately translate attorney instructions. Attend hearings and provide whispered simultaneous interpretations as required and permitted.

  • Assist clients for whom English is a second language with attaining full comprehension of their legal rights and obligations.

 

Minimum requirements: 

  • Master’s degree in English or closely related field plus a minimum of 1 year verifiable experience as Translator/Interpreter or similar occupation.

  • Requires a very high degree of fluency in Mandarin Chinese language.

  • Experience may have been gained in teaching or other occupation requiring advanced knowledge and fluency in both English and Chinese languages and management of documents and files. Foreign degree equivalency accepted.
