Travel Issues for Permanent Residents in Pandemic Times

United States travel restrictions have been changing quickly and often in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Importantly, these conditions can affect the policies that apply to lawful and conditional permanent residents (or green card holders).

When applying for naturalization, permanent residents must show they have satisfied the continuous residence requirement. This means they’ve maintained residence in the U.S. for the required amount of time - three or five years. Generally, leaving the U.S. for more than six months has consequences for continuous residence.

But what if you’ve been stuck abroad during the Covid-19 pandemic and country travel restrictions or illness are preventing your return to the U.S.? These issues can get confusing. We’ve outlined USCIS policies so far, and how you can begin to prepare for these urgent situations.
