在特定情形下，本科学位的OPT可在研究生阶段继续使用，具体分析如下：
本科阶段非STEM专业的学生，无论是因未申请OPT或申请了OPT未实际使用，移民局均视为该阶段OPT已使用。因此，在取得更高学位之后，其本科阶段的OPT将无法继续使用。
本科阶段为STEM专业的学生，在取得更高学位之后，其本科阶段未使用的OPT延期部分可以再次使用。其中，申请使用OPT延期应在本科学位取得后的10年内。若学生本科阶段所学专业在其取得学位之后成为了STEM专业，上述规定也同样适用。

若学生在取得首个研究生学位之后申请使用12个月的OPT，在未来再次取得同级别的研究生学位之后，其将无法再申请12个月的OPT。若前一个研究生学位的OPT未完全使用满12个月，其可在取得第二个研究生学位之后，继续使用前一个研究生学位未使用完的OPT时间。
