从2020年10月1日起，纽约州居民只有持有真实身份证、或其他联邦批准的文件如美国护照、护照卡或军事证件等，方被许可在美国国内登机，或进入联邦设施如军事基地等。今年10月1日之前，真实身份证和旧版驾照都可以用来乘坐美国境内航班。
美国于2005年通过了《真实身份证法案》(Real ID Act)，旨在采用统一标准，建立证件的最低安全标准，国土安全局随后推出了真实身份证样本。真实身份证为一种标准卡，既可以当作驾照，也可以作为联邦认可的身份证。纽约机动车辆管理局(DMV)从2017年10月起，就开始为提出申请的居民换发真实身份证。
与普通驾照相比，真实身份证的右上角多了一颗五角星，表明其符合联邦安全标准。其中，美国公民可申请增强版驾照(Enhanced Driver License, EDL)，证件右下角会有一面美国国旗。
办理真实身份证所需材料：
申请人需携带以下材料，到纽约机动车辆管理局办理真实身份证：
身份证明：出生证明，护照，工作许可文件，永久居民卡，或持有I-94批准表格的外国护照核证复印件；
社会安全号码的证明：社会安全卡，W-2表，或标有社会安全号的工资单；
纽约州居住证明：租赁或租约协议，抵押贷款账单，水电费账单，或就业、医疗及学校文件；
其他文件：姓名更改文件原件或核证复印件，如结婚证书或离婚法令。
