The immigrant community is currently being inundated with notices informing them that they are being fined, with amounts as high as $1,820,352. While the government has long held the authority to issue these civil penalties, this administration’s widespread assessment of civil penalties is unprecedented.



Am I at risk?


Between January 2025 to mid-March 2026, there have been 65,101 civil fines issued, totaling more than $36 billion.


Even if you have not yet received a notice, if you fit the criteria, the government may issue you a notice.


Are my assets at risk?


The government has sued immigrants to force payment of the fines. In addition to lawsuits, the government can seize tax returns, garnish wages, and refer individuals to debt collectors.
